When a heavily armed gunman stormed his former place of work and fatally shot 12 people in Virginia Beach, Virginia, last week, he was just the latest example of workplace killers taking personal and professional grievances out on one-time colleagues.

While incidents of mass violence of any kind are rare, experts worry workplace violence is a persistent problem and may be on the rise.

May has been the deadliest month in Dallas since the 1990s. Forty homicides have been reported in the city this month — that's more than one a day.

Four killings were reported in just the past 24 hours.

Update, 6 p.m.: Erbie Bowser, the 44-year-old suspect in Wednesday's shooting spree, was a certified special education teacher in the Mesquite School District from 2001 to 2010. Laura Jobe with the district says colleagues who knew Bowser are shocked.
