You Can Still Find Funnel Cake Ale, But Supplies Are Limited

State Fair of Texas
Funnel Cake Ale is still available, but not much is left.

Five stories that have North Texas talking: Funnel Cake Ale is still available, Ben Wheeler’s first Feral Hog Festival without its founder, watch the partial solar eclipse this afternoon, and more.

Funnel Cake Ale was a huge hit at this year’s State Fair – so much so that it sold out, the first time for a Big Tex finalist. Luckily, the Community Beer Company saved a few barrels, and will be available for a limited time in its taproom. The company says on its Facebook page that Funnel Cake Ale “is a one-time brew…until next year’s State Fair.”

The 2014 State Fair of Texas was a big hit. It set a new record for coupon sales for food and rides. Funnel Cake Ale won the Most Creative award at the 2014 Big Tex Awards. If you didn’t get a taste, expect beer with an essence of funnel cake and powdered sugar on the rim of your glass. Check out our past State Fair of Texas coverage.

  • Residents interrupted a Dallas school board meeting yesterday to call for Superintendent Mike Miles’ resignation. The reason for the outburst: Miles had Dallas school police remove board trustee Bernadette Nutall from Dade Middle School Oct. 13. Miles says Nutall was disruptive and interfered with his job. Nutall told The Dallas Morning News she went to Dade after the superintendent replaced the principal, two assistant principals and 10 teachers. KERA’s Bill Zeeble reported that the district is still dealing from the fallout from that incident.

  • An art installation at White Rock Lake is now on a national list of “at-risk” cultural sites. KERA’s Jerome Weeks reports the White Rock Lake Wildlife Water Theater – a series of 63 metal poles installed in 2001 – are now rusting and neighborhood groups have called for them to be removed. The poles were designed by Tom Orr and Frances Bagley to attract wildlife. The Nasher Sculpture Center was on the same list two years ago for the sun damage supposedly caused by the reflection from Museum Tower.

  • The annual Feral Hog Festival in the town of Ben Wheeler begins tomorrow. The festival began after the town was designated as the Feral Hog Capitol of Texas. Last year, KERA’s Anne Bothwell spoke with the late Brooks Gremmels, who founded the festival and played a major role in revitalizing the East Texas town. This year’s festivities will kick off with the Fall Feral Follies and the Hog Queen Coronation, and will feature live music and other events throughout the weekend.

  • A partial solar eclipse will grace the skies later this afternoon. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon blocks part of the sun from view. North Texans will be able to see the eclipse at 4:48 p.m. However, it’s not safe to look directly at the eclipse, and sunglasses won’t do much good. NASA has a few tips on how to view it.
