Paul Quinn College in southeast Oak Cliff announced Thursday that it's expanding to the suburbs.
Starting this fall, accepted students will live, work and study in Plano. PQC-Plano comes as an expansion of the school's "Urban Work College" model. The program seeks to tackle poverty by offering students jobs, housing and lower tuition.
Paul Quinn will house students in Plano apartments, and it will appeal to corporate partners to provide internships and classroom space.
"By forgoing the traditional campus infrastructure, we don't have the campus maintenance cost," said Michael Sorrell, president of Paul Quinn College. "So all those savings go towards the students. So they're not being charged for overhead that they frankly shouldn't be charged for."
Last year, Paul Quinn became the ninth federally recognized Work College. The college says its work program has helped reduce tuition and fees by more than $10,000, as well as boost graduation rates.
