Atmos Energy investigated gas leaks in northwest Dallas, but did not evacuate residents or shut off gas lines until after the Feb. 23 house explosion on Española Drive, which killed a 12-year-old girl."

The top local stories this morning from KERA News:

Crews from Atmos evacuated homes and apartment units in a northwest Dallas neighborhood Wednesday night after responding to a natural gas smell.

This was the same neighborhood where a house explosion killed a 12-year-old girl last month.

Hundreds of nearby homes have been without natural gas for weeks as crews replace thousands of feet of outdated pipes. The 25 homes evacuated last night were not in the outage zone.

Residents were allowed to return home Thursday afternoon.

As of Monday, Atmos says 80 percent of the planned outage area have had natural gas service restored.
