The top local stories this morning from KERA News: A hearing’s underway in Austin for a bill that would ban so-called “sanctuary cities.”
Under Senate Bill 4, local police could enforce immigration laws if the officer works with a federal immigration officer or under an agreement between the local and federal agency. The bill also would punish local governments if their law enforcement agencies fail to honor requests to hand over immigrants in custody for possible deportation.
Supporters say the legislation will keep communities safer, but some in law enforcement oppose the bill.
Senate Bill 4 was updated yesterday with wording that would also give campus police the power to enforce federal immigration laws.
Today’s hearing comes after the Governor yesterday pulled more than a million dollars in state money out of Travis County. The sheriff earlier decided to limit cooperation on federal requests to detain immigrants.
