Top Stories: Dallas County GOP Elects First Female Leader; Kids Going Hungry At School

The top local stories this morning from KERA News:

The Dallas County Republican Party has a new leader: the first woman to head the local party. Missy Shorey was elected unanimously Monday night.

Shorey will take over immediately for the previous chairman, Phillip Huffines, The Dallas Morning News reports. Huffines resigned this month to run for the Texas Senate. 

Other stories this morning:

  • Two members of Congress from opposite parties, Joe Barton and Eddie Bernice Johnson, will join a group of people speak this morning at a forum in Dallas on legislation to support the so-called "DREAMers."
  • The Justice Department is trying to stop Dallas-based AT&T from buying Time Warner for $85 billion.
  • One in five North Texas children lives in poverty, and more than a quarter million are hungry as their parents struggle to feed them. Those are just a few statistics from a recent 97-page report issued by Children’s Health, the Dallas-based children’s hospital network. KERA’s Bill Zeeble and Eric Aasen break down the report.
