The top local stories this evening from KERA News:

Gov. Greg Abbott signed the $217 billion state budget this afternoon. It includes funding increases for the state's beleaguered child welfare system and $800 million for border security.

Abbott used his veto pen to strike $120 million in expenditures. That's about one-twentieth of a single percentage point of the entire budget.

Other stories this evening:

·         The 15th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition has now been put to rest for another four years. It's been two and a half hectic weeks in Fort Worth.  We know the winners -- and many have heard their performances. Now, we can hear some of their words, recorded right after they won.

·         The Dallas Theater Center took center stage at last night's Tony Awards. The center accepted a Tony for regional theater -- the award recognizes artistic achievement that contributes to the growth of theater in the United States.
