The top local stories this morning from KERA News: Now that the filing deadline has passed, the March primary elections are taking shape.

Every major statewide official is up for re-election next year. There’s also a scramble for a number of congressional seats that’ll be vacated by retiring lawmakers. Several incumbents in Congress will also face challengers, including embattled U.S. Rep. Blake Farenthold, R-Corpus Christi, and U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Dallas.

Other stories this morning:

  • A number of retired teachers are leaving the state’s health insurance program after the Legislature altered plans to make up for a budget shortfall.
  • Teachers in Dallas ISD are going beyond the math problems and spelling tests to teach students to develop social and emotional skills.

You can listen to North Texas stories weekdays at 8:22 a.m. and 6:20 p.m. on KERA 90.1 FM.
