Texas Public TV Stations Look At Obesity And Solutions (video)

Thursday night KERA Channel 13 and public television stations across the state will air an hour-long program on obesity, its link to hunger and what Texans are doing to combat the problem.

The program includes a look at a model nutrition program in Dallas schools. In Fort Worth KERA’s Shelley Kofler visits a school gym with the district’s fitness and health director Georgi Roberts who talks about combating obesity with better physical education.

Roberts: Pretty close to 50 percent of our kids are overweight. We know that they’re not healthy. Now we’ve got to fix it.  Probably one of the most significant things was in the 2009 legislative session the State of Texas took out health education as a graduation requirement and reduced the PE requirements for graduation.

The program, “"Feeding Minds: Texas Takes on Hunger and Obesity,"  airs Thursday at 8:00 p.m. on KERA Channel 13.
