Dallas-Fort Worth TV station WFAA announced Tuesday it will broadcast next week’s high school football game featuring Plano Senior High and El Paso's Eastwood High School of El Paso.
This game almost didn’t happen.
The alleged gunman who killed 22 people at an El Paso Walmart graduated from Plano Senior High School. Soon after the shooting, the Plano Independent School District announced it was cancelling the matchup, citing safety concerns. That drew criticism from some school officials in El Paso, who said the game could serve as a chance for both communities to come together and begin to heal.
The game was ultimately reinstated and will be held at The Star in Frisco, the Dallas Cowboys’ indoor practice facility. The Plano-Eastwood matchup is Sept. 5. WFAA-TV will air the game live during prime time. KVIA-TV in El Paso also plans to broadcast the game.
