By KERA staff

Dallas, TX – KERA 90.1 reporters, hosts and management garnered multiple honors this fall from a handful of organizations, including the prestigious J. B. "Buck" Marryat Award, presented to Assistant Station Manager Yolette Garcia.

The Marryat Award, presented during the Dallas Press Club "Katie" Awards, recognized Garcia for a career of excellence in journalism. The Texas native, also news director at KERA 90.1, has been with the public broadcasting organization in a variety of news and public affairs roles since 1983, including executive producer on national radio and television productions. Her work in both radio and television has garnered numerous awards, including a 1994 Emmy Award for "After Goodbye: An AIDS Story," a documentary broadcast nationally on PBS.

Other recent awards for KERA 90.1 include a Dallas Press Club "Katie" Award for Reporter Bill Zeeble in the Governmental/Political Story category for his story, "Race In the Race: The Senate Primary Runoff."

In October, KERA 90.1 was honored by the Texas Society of Architects as a recipient of the John G. Flowers Award, presented to individuals and organizations for excellence in the promotion of architecture through the media. The award cited KERA 90.1 for its "extensive coverage of architectural and urban design issues" and for encouraging "both interest in and understanding of architecture by the entire community."

In October, the Dallas Bar also announced that KERA 90.1 Reporter Suzanne Sprague had won the Philbin Award, which honors excellence in legal reporting. Sprague won in the Radio category for a report she produced about the Dallas district attorney's race during the March primary. The judges praised Sprague's report for helping voters understand the issues in the race so they could make an informed choice.

In September, the Dallas Observer named "The Glenn Mitchell Show" the Best Radio Show in the Dallas/ Fort Worth market. This marks the fourth year in a row the talk show has earned the honor.

KERA is committed to providing in-depth coverage of the issues of importance to North Texans. The station's radio productions have earned local, regional and national awards, including two Katie Awards for journalistic excellence in 2002.
