The Fort Worth City Council is moving forward with zoning changes to its historic Stockyards over the objections of some residents and civic leaders.
Council members voted 8-1 Tuesday night to change building rules at the major tourist attraction. The vote paves the way for a plan to re-zone the area from heavy industrial to mixed-use. The change would allow for residential development.
The action follows the announcement that a Stockyards landowner and California developer have planned a $175 million redevelopment project. The redevelopment would bring two more hotels, residences and livestock auctions to the district.
Conservationists say the modern development will tarnish the western heritage of the Stockyards.
