Several Dallas police officers and SWAT members were involved in an hours-long standoff this morning in East Dallas with a man who shot a woman and then barricaded himself in a residence.
The standoff, in the 6000 block of Belmont Avenue, ended around 11:30 a.m. with police declaring the man was found dead inside the home. Dallas police say they can't determine if the suspect was shot by officers of if he shot himself. The medical examiner's office will make that determination, police say.
The incident started when police received a call about a woman being taken against her will from a convenience store, Dallas police said via Twitter.
Police arrived and a woman ran from a house. The suspect then pushed her down and shot her. Officers returned fire and rescued the woman, who has been taken to Baylor Medical Center in stable condition. The suspect ran back into the house. Officers then say they heard what they believe to be gunshots fired inside the home.
Dallas SWAT members spent the morning trying to communicate with the barricaded suspect. They used "distraction devices" during the standoff.
Skillman Street was shut down at Belmont due to the standoff. Also, several side streets in the neighborhood were closed.
