Denton could get 100 percent of its electricity from renewable sources — like solar and wind — by 2020, if city officials heed the recommendations of a consulting group.
Enterprise Risk Consulting is scheduled to present its energy plan Monday to the Denton Public Utilities Board, according to the Denton Record-Chronicle. City Council will review the plan with any comments from the utilities board on Tuesday.
The group’s main recommendation is for Denton Municipal Electric to purchase more energy from wind and solar farms when electricity is needed most. "Solar farms and coastal wind farms make the most electricity on a hot summer afternoon. If DME signs long-term contracts for solar and coastal wind energy, Denton can reach 100 percent renewable by 2020," the Record-Chronicle reports.
Enterprise Risk Consulting, based in Austin and Santa Fe, helped Georgetown develop its plan to abandon fossil fuels and become one of the first U.S. cities to be 100 percent renewable.
