Just hours after an unconscious driver was pulled from the cold waters of Bachman Lake, Dallas Police Chief David Brown honored those who saved the man.
About 6 a.m., two joggers saw a car on Northwest Highway speeding into the lake. They called 9-1-1 and dove in to help. Neither could open the doors of the slowly sinking SUV.
Two police officers arrived and jumped in. They tried to break the side windows, and then managed to pull the unconscious driver through the sunroof of the Izuzu. Once on shore, a third officer began CPR.
Chief Brown says the driver told doctors he remembers nothing. The chief says a medical problem caused the man to speed off the road and into the lake.
Calling the rescue effort “phenomenal work,” he presented "citizen certificates of merit" to the joggers, Denise McElroy and Mark Sorley, both Southwest Airlines employees. The chief also gave awards to officers Brian Mabry and Sean Mock, and to Sgt. Matt Williamson.
