For the first time in years, Dallas will hold a free downtown New Year’s Eve party. The Party on the Plaza, happening outside Dallas City Hall, promises two bands, over 20 food trucks and a big fireworks show.
The city hasn’t hosted a big New Year’s Eve event since the last Big D NYE in 2014. This year, thanks to funding from the Dallas Tourism Public Improvement District, a downtown Dallas party is back.
Frank Librio is chief marketing officer with Visit Dallas, the organization that promotes the city. He said they're hoping for a big crowd at the event.
"We have or are expecting 7,000 people on the plaza and there’ll be overflow for people to watch the fireworks,” Librio said. “Of course we’ll count down to the Reunion Tower Over The Top fireworks show with the most dazzling fireworks show in the Southwest.”
Librio said the show will include Jason and Michael Castro, of American Idol fame, followed by the Emerald City Band — which will perform before and after the midnight fireworks.
“We want city hall plaza activated several times throughout the year, and [to] make that Dallas‘ gathering place at times of celebration,” Librio said. “And it’s all free."
Librio said organizers hope this will become an annual downtown New Year's Eve party.
