The race pits two conservative candidates against each other.

Early voting starts Wednesday in the special runoff election for State Senate District 30, a large rural district currently represented by Republican Pat Fallon, who’s headed to Congress.

The district covers all or part of 14 counties in North Texas, including parts of Denton and Collin Counties.

The runoff candidates are Republicans Shelley Luther and Drew Springer. Luther generated headlines when she went to jail temporarily after reopening her salon against Governor Greg Abbott’s order. She became a symbol for Republicans angry with government-mandated business closures in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic.

Springer is a state Representative whose House district surrounds — but doesn’t include — Wichita Falls. He has a business background and Abbott’s endorsement. The governor calls him a “proven conservative” who has the backing of the National Rifle Association.

Election Day is Dec. 19.

The winner will join 30 other state Senators in Texas for the upcoming Legislative session. Find the name of your local representative here.

Early voting dates and times vary slightly depending on where you live. Voters should check their county election websites for details.
