Top Stories: Two Cases Of The Zika Virus Found In Dallas; Finding Affordable Childcare

The top stories this afternoon from KERA News: Dallas County confirmed two cases of the Zika virus today. Neither of the patients was identified, but one is the first United States case of sexually-transmitted Zika linked to the recent outbreak in the Western hemisphere.

The other patient had traveled to Venezuela and was diagnosed with the virus after coming home.

Last night's big winner of the Republican caucus in Iowa was a Texan – Ted Cruz. There were Texas losers, too. Including Senator Rand Paul, who grew up outside Houston. Paul finished fifth, just four years after his dad, Ron Paul, collected the most delegates in Iowa.

Ron Paul was in North Texas on Tuesday, and  he’s speaking at the University of Texas at Arlington. He admits his son’s prospects are dim.

The challenge of finding affordable childcare is a tough one. There are federal subsidies to help low-income families pay for quality day care. The problem? That money often takes months to come through.

  • Baylor University in Waco is facing accusations that it has ignored sexual assault victims. ESPN is reporting that Baylor failed to act on complaints by three female students who said they were assaulted by a former football player.
