Dallas Council Looks At 2012 To-Do List

Dallas City Council members will look over their 2012 “to do” list today. It’s a list of objectives and projects that address public safety, economic development and making the city “more fun”! KERA’s BJ Austin reports.

The strategies, objectives and work plans come out of a city council retreat last fall. The most immediate task is prioritize streets in need of repair, and other projects, for the 2012 bond election.

Another top objective is to make Dallas the 5th safest city of a million people or more. It’s #7 right now. Included in the plan is identification of the city’s hot crime spots and surveillance cameras in the top ten.

Bring more manufacturing and jobs to Southern Dallas. That includes renewed focus on developing the Inland Port. Get busy on the McKinney Avenue Trolley loop into downtown, completing it by the end of 2013. Develop a plan to plug electric cars into parking meters, and maybe install a solar farm.

And in the making the city more fun category: install sidewalk food vendors and carts, host a major citywide festival, and bring cyclovia to Dallas – an annual one day event where streets are close to cars and people walk, bike, skate and party.

Former KERA reporter BJ Austin spent more than 25 years in broadcast journalism, anchoring and reporting in Atlanta, New York, New Orleans and Dallas. Along the way, she covered Atlanta City Hall, the Georgia Legislature and the corruption trials of Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards.
