Rawlings Backs Controversial Resolution for Teacher Evaluations

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings will sign on to a resolution supporting teacher evaluations based on student achievement while attacking teacher retention based on seniority.

The document also backs more teacher and principal training, as well as higher pay for both.

The resolution will be submitted at the U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting tomorrow in Orlando, Florida. Others signing on to the resolution include mayors from Philadelphia, Sacramento,  Los Angeles, and West Sacramento.

Rawlings campaigned for better education in his race to be mayor, even though he exercises no power over the Dallas school district, its superintendent, or the school board. He says he played a role in the Dallas school board’s choice of Mike Miles as the district’s new superintendent.

So far, Miles shares many of the reform efforts outlined in the mayors’ resolution. Teacher organizations agree with some of the resolution's plans, while opposing others.
