Young Voter Interest Expected To Rise

By Bill Zeeble

Dallas, TX – The number of young voters has risen in every presidential election since 2000. And Political Science Professor Richard Nieme expects that percentage will rise yet again. He says Barack Obama's campaign is driving much of that new interest.

Professor Niemi: "That certainly doesn't mean he's captured all their votes. Just as Hillary Clinton isn't drawing votes from all the woman. But I think it's clear that Obama has excited a large number of people and particularly youths."

Nieme says turnout of voters aged 18 to 24 grew 11 percent when George W. Bush ran for president the 2nd time.

The Professor says younger and older voters care about the same issues.
