Study Up For ‘Think’: Scientology's Promise Of 'Total Freedom'
Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Lawrence Wright of the New Yorker walks us past the tabloid racks and through the actual, mysterious Church of Scientology as a guest of Think. He’ll talk to host Krys Boyd at noon about his book Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief.
An excerpt from Wright’s book follows one convert, 21-year-old Londoner Paul Haggis, from a record shop where he first received a copy of Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health by L. Ron Hubbard from a fast-talking evangelist to the circumstances of vulnerability that led him to claim the ideals of the religion, which Hubbard describes as such:
“A civilization without insanity, without criminals and without war, where the able can prosper and honest beings can have rights, and where Man is free to rise to greater heights…”
In Going Clear, Haggis found there was much more to it.
