GM and Oldsmobile

General Motors announced today that it is phasing out its venerable Oldsmobile division and slashing its workforce by ten percent. The moves are a new indication of weakness in the auto industry. But as NPR's Jerome Vaughn reports, Oldsmobile was in trouble long before the recent economic slowdown. Despite numerous efforts by GM to freshen Oldsmobile's image, the cars never caught on with baby boomers and younger drivers.
