A white Dallas police officer said she didn't realize she was in the wrong apartment until after she shot her black neighbor and went into the hallway to check the address, according to an affidavit released Monday.

The Dallas police officer who says she mistakenly went to the wrong apartment after work last week and fatally shot a black man also fired her weapon and wounded a man during an on-duty confrontation in 2017, according to court documents.

Dallas police have identified Amber Guyger as the white off-duty officer involved in the fatal shooting of a black man. She's been with the city's police department for four years assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division. 

No other details were released with identification of the officer.

Authorities are seeking a manslaughter warrant for a Dallas police officer who shot and killed a neighbor after she said she mistook his apartment for her own, police said Friday.

The trial of former Balch Springs police officer Roy Oliver continues this week in Dallas.

He’s facing murder charges for shooting into a car full of teenagers leaving a party in April 2017 and killing 15-year-old Jordan Edwards. It’s one of several controversial police shootings of black men, teenagers and boys that have grabbed national headlines.

But it’s rare that a case like this makes it to court.

Bill To Enforce Reporting Of Police Shootings Stumbles, Then Passes

After failing by one vote on the House floor Wednesday night, a bill to penalize law enforcement agencies that don't report police shootings to the state was reconsidered and tentatively passed on a quick, quiet voice vote Thursday morning.

When Texas police are involved in a shooting – whether they shot the gun or not – they are mandated to report it to the attorney general’s office. But the legislator who sponsored the 2015 law acknowledges that it has no teeth. And one report has found that not all police departments are following the rules.
