The severe thunderstorm that blew through parts of North Texas late yesterday afternoon has caused some schools to close. The Dallas Business Journal reports power outages are to blame. School closures include the following: the entire Arlington school district, UT Arlington, the University of North Texas at Dallas, 41 campuses in the Dallas school district and six campuses each at Richardson and Mesquite ISD. - Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan denied being exposed to someone with the disease when he first visited Texas Health Presbyterian, the hospital said in a statement. Duncan's neighbors in the Liberian capital of Monrovia told The Associated Press that he helped a 19-year-old pregnant woman who has since died of Ebola. Three siblings were pulled out of Wallace Elementary in Richardson and another person from a Plano school as a precaution after it was revealed that they may have had some form of contact with Duncan. None of the four have shown any symptoms, but authorities are being cautious. [Dallas Morning News]
- Texas can continue enforcing the stricter abortion requirements for now, The Texas Tribune reports. The ruling by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals means eight abortion clinics across the state will be allowed to stay open while the courts deliberate the constitutionality of the abortion bill. A hearing for the 5th Circuit has not been set.
- Fort Worth-based RadioShack may have reached a refinancing deal, Bloomberg News reports. The $590 million refinancing agreement could keep the struggling electronics retailer afloat through the 2014 holiday season. RadioShack has had 10 straight quarters of losses, due in part to competition with electronics and online retailers.
