President Donald Trump announced Neil Gorsuch as his nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court Tuesday in a televised address from the White House.

The White House moved the announcement up by two days, a schedule change observers saw as an "attempt to change the subject" from the president's controversial executive order on immigration, NPR reports. The travel ban drew international criticism and caused unrest in airports across the country this weekend.

Trump is said to have made his selection from a group of three finalists, all federal appeals court judges appointed by former President George W. Bush: Neil Gorsuch, Thomas Hardiman and William Pryor.

Each appeared on Trump's list of 21 possible choices that he made public during the campaign, and each has met with Trump to discuss the vacancy that arose when Antonin Scalia died at West Texas ranch in February of last year.

A month later, President Barack Obama nominated U.S. Circuit Court Judge Merrick Garland for the vacancy, but Senate Republicans refused to consider the pick, saying the seat should be filled only after the November election.

You can listen to NPR coverage of the president's nomination starting at 7 p.m. on KERA 90.1. Or you can watch the live stream from ABC News below.
