Top Stories: Mumps Cases Hit 20-Year High; Thin Line Expands To Narrative Films

The top local stories this morning from KERA News: Mumps cases in Texas have hit a 20-year high. There have been 221 cases so far this year, according to the Department of State Health Services.

The most recent outbreak was on South Padre Island, a popular Spring Break destination. 13 cases were reported between March 8 and March 22

Mumps is highly contagious. Symptoms include swollen or tender salivary glands, low fever, tiredness and muscle aches. People who think they have mumps should contact their health care provider. Health officials also recommend checking on the status of your mumps vaccinations.

  • A bill that would fix the Dallas Police and Fire Pension Fund now heads to the full House.
  • A Texas Senate committee next week will vote whether to nominate Dallas billionaire Kelcy Warren to the state’s Parks and Wildlife Commission. His company, Energy Transfer Partners, is behind a number of high-profile pipeline projects, including the Dakota Access Pipeline.
  • Denton’s Thin Line Festival is normally focused on documentary films, but the festival is branching out for its 10th edition.
