Top Stories: Immigrant Children Moving To Temporary West Texas Shelter

Federal authorities say they will open a temporary shelter for unaccompanied immigrant children in far west Texas as existing facilities reach capacity.

A spokesman for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said Thursday that authorities would open a shelter at the Tornillo port of entry, about 40 miles southeast of El Paso. Marfa Public Radio’s Carlos Morales reports.

  • Thousands of Texas Republicans are in San Antonio for their party convention this weekend. As KUT’s Ben Philpott says, talk of President Trump is much different than it was two years ago at the last state GOP convention, which was held shortly after Senator Ted Cruz lost the nomination to Trump.

  • More than 100,000 Texas students were affected by computer glitches while taking statewide standardized tests this spring, about 30,000 more than initial estimates. Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath shared that updated figure with the State Board of Education Wednesday.

  • Earlier this year, the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery unveiled official portraits of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. Think is broadcasting from the studios of NPR headquarters in Washington this week, and today Krys Boyd talked with Kim Sajet, the director of the museum, about the messages a portrait can convey.

  • The Japanese artist Takashi Murakami is famous for colorful paintings that merge anime and manga with ancient mythologies. A retropsective of his work just opened at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and it's expected to be a blockbuster. In this week's Art&Seek Spotlight, Hady Mawajdeh went to the museum to sit down with Michael Darling, who curated the show.
