Top Stories: Border Apprehensions Rise In May; Spotlight On Theater Legend Adrian Hall

The top local stories this evening from KERA News:

Apprehensions of families along the Texas-Mexico border spiked last month, according to The Texas Tribune. The number of families caught entering the country illegally in May increased sixfold compared with the same month last year.

The Department of Homeland Security tells the Tribune that the figures justify the recent deployment of the National Guard to the area. But when looking at the fiscal year so far, from October through May, compared to the same time period last year, there was a slight decrease in the number of families apprehended or who turned themselves in to border agents.

Other stories this evening:

  • It appears the U.S. Customs and Border Protection is adopting a new tactic to keep out certain immigrants: telling border agents to physically get between would-be asylum seekers before they reach a border checkpoint to file an asylum claim. Journalist Bob Moore has been on the El Paso-Ciudad Juarez border covering this for Texas Monthly. He spoke with Texas Standard host David Brown about what he's observed.

  • For two years, the Art&Seek Artist Spotlight has been sharing profiles of North Texas creatives. Today, we're revisiting one of our favorites with American theater legend Adrian Hall. For years, he ran the Dallas Theater Center. Now retired, he sat down with KERA's Jerome Weeks in 2016 to reflect on his legacy and a difficult diagnosis.
