Cronuts seem to have appeared suddenly, however, it may have been a planned fad.

The cronut craze, the superfood frenzy and the truffle oil trend may be intentional palette fads cooked up by an unseen system of food advocates. At 1 p.m., David Sax, who explores the objectives of popularizing food in his book "The Tastemakers: Why We're Crazy for Cupcakes But Fed Up with Fondue," will join Krys Boyd to talk about what we eat and why we eat it on Think.

Get a head start and learn aboutthe four different types of food trends

A trailer for the book shows various foodies explaining their dietary preferences in a humorous light.

The Huffington Post lists a handful (or more aptly a mouthful) of food trends sighted for 2014 so far.

Sax has also examined the decline of the Jewish delicatessen in his 2009 book "Save the Deli." A blog for the book posted occurrences in the delicatessen community, including many deli opening listings, a deli cookbook recommendation and a deli duel announcement.

"Tastemakers: Why We're Crazy for Cupcakes But Fed Up with Fondue" has its own website where onlookers can take a quiz to see if they are a tastemaker as well as read an excerpt from the book.

Listen to Think on KERA 90.1 at noon and 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday. You can also stream the show live online.
