Fort Worth Superintendent Walter Dansby negotiated a resignation settlement of more than $900,000. He’ll soon take on a different job.
Dansby surprised people by announcing his resignation Monday after more than two years on the job. He and trustees worked out a package that will pay his salary plus an extra year’s pay. Beginning next week, he’ll take on a public relations role through the end of January, earning nearly another quarter million dollars. Then he’ll retire.
Trustee Ann Sutherland voted to accept Dansby’s resignation. She didn’t think the district was going in the right direction.
“I’m looking for somebody,” Sutherland said, “who’ll put the focus back in the classroom and school and to help the teachers become empowered to teach the way they think kids need to learn and not to tell them exactly what they have to do.”
Board member Tobi Jackson said the district is better off thanks to Dansby.
“Mr. Dansby leaves behind a legacy of students,” Jackson said, “that are now adults that work in this district and they will continue his handprints, and his fingerprints will be all over this district for decades to come, and that’s a great thing.”
Trustees are expected to schedule a meeting in the next week to discuss an interim superintendent.
