From The Newsroom: Ken Paxton In Court Today; 'Dying Words' Of Jeff Schmalz

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton pleaded not guilty to felony charges in court in Fort Worth on Aug. 27.

The top local stories this morning from the KERA Newsroom:

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton will appear in a McKinney courtroom today. His defense team will try to get felony securities fraud charges against him dismissed.

Paxton’s accused of encouraging people to invest more than $100,000 into a tech startup without revealing he was being paid by the company. This all allegedly happened when Paxton was in the state Legislature.

  • Texas Central Railway, the company behind the Dallas – to – Houston high speed rail project, begins a series of public meetings tonight. The first will be held at the South Side Ballroom in Dallas at 6:30 p.m.
  • When college dorms close during the holidays, homeless students don’t have many options. A program at Texas Woman’s University in Denton is trying to change that.
  • New York Times reporter Jeff Schmalz is the subject of the documentary “Dying Words,” which airs tonight at 8 on KERA FM.  His reporting helped transform coverage of AIDS.
