A gunman, identified as 29-year-old Omar Mateen, killed 49 people and injured 53 at Pulse, a popular gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida on Sunday, June 12. Mateen, too, was killed after police broke into the building, where he was holding 30 more people hostage for several hours, and shot him. The night is known as the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history.

Five Public Radio/TV Projects To Explore After Worst Mass Shooting In Modern U.S. History

As a shaken Orlando tries to come to grips with the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, here are five ways KERA has explored the gun issue on radio and television in recent months.

The Development of American Gun Culture

In her new book "The Gunning Of America: Business And The Making of American Gun Culture," author Pamela Haag explores why so many Americans have interpreted the Second Amendment's right "to keep and bear arms" as a directive -- and how gun manufacturers have marketed their products through history. On June 1, Haag talked with KERA's Krys Boyd on Think.

The Minds Behind The 'Open Carry' Movement In Texas

A new law allowing licensed Texans to carry firearms openly took effect Jan. 1. This August, state public colleges and universities will enter the "campus carry" era -- meaning anyone with a concealed-carry license can take a weapon into most public areas on campus. Shortly after "open carry" debuted, KERA's Rick Holter had a Friday Conversation with C.J. Grisham, founder of Open Carry Texas.

Grisham refused to come into the KERA studio, saying, "I will not go someplace that I can't defend myself and I can't defend my family. Unfortunately, the [KERA] studio is a gun-free zone. And even though I want to talk about gun rights, it's kind of hard to talk about gun rights in a place that doesn't respect them."

Fashion Blooms For Women Aiming To Concealed-Carry

In the weeks after open carry came to Texas, KERA's Lauren Silverman looked into the ways gun sellers and fashion mavens are catering to fashion-conscious women. "“The misperception is that women are casual about the carrying of the gun," said Carrie Lightfoot, who runs a company called The Well-Armed Woman . "And that really is not accurate. Women are extremely responsible and concerned about safety.”

Asking 'Does A Pistol Make You Safer?' At Firearms Festival

In April, NPR's John Burnett visited the Texas Firearms Festival to talk guns with the people who own them. "If you're in Paris and you see people coming with AKs into your rock concert, that sucks. But it sucks worse if you're unarmed," says festival producer Robert Farago. "I'm not saying that being armed is gonna save your life, but at least you have an effective tool to mount some kind of defense."

'Armed In America'

In May, PBS presented a pair of documentaries about weapons in this country called "Armed in America." One focused on a law officer who created a SWAT team that ultimately killed his son. The other looked at how Christians view guns.
