Dallas, TX – Carrollton Police charge a family "in-law" with the murder of a 10 year old girl over the weekend. KERA's BJ Austin reports.

10 year old Jasmen Gonzalez and her family came from Oklahoma City to visit relatives in Carrollton. She was reported missing from the apartment Saturday night. Her body was found nearby on Sunday. She had been stabbed.

Mitchell: On November 1, 2011, the Carrollton Police Department arrested Jose Conception Sifuentes with the murder of Jasmen Gonzalez.

Police Lt. Doug Mitchell says Martha Sifuentes, the suspect's common-law wife, is the victim's cousin.

Mitchell: We're doing all that we know how to do to lessen their grief. I know that watching them interact with the detectives is the best word I can use is they're devastated by this. How do you fathom losing a ten year old child.

Investigators believe Jasmen was snatched from a bedroom where she was sleeping, killed and dumped in some bushes in the span of only 30 minutes. They are not saying at this time if the girl was sexually assaulted.

Lt. Mitchell says a knife with what appears to be blood on it was found in an SUV belonging to Sifuentes. Police say the 23 year old suspect is in the U.S. illegally.
